Hot Yoga

Hot Studio

Fitness First introduces our HOT STUDIO, powered by an innovative infrared heating system. Heated classes require less warm-up time and deliver workouts with increased intensity. Using an infrared heating system provides a clean feeling, invigorating environment, unlike the ‘stuffy’ air you experience in a conventionally heated studio.

Infrared heaters warm people directly rather than heating the air itself, this feels natural and warm like the feeling of warmth provided by the sun. The heat is distributed evenly and does not ‘blow hot air’ resulting in a quiet alternative that provides a superior experience. This innovative new studio space will be the host for many new classes including of course HOT YOGA.

What is Hot Yoga

Hot yoga is a vigorous form of yoga performed in a very warm and humid studio. There are many different types of hot yoga classes including Hot Power Vinyasa, Yoga with weights and restorative yoga. The room is heated to approximately 37-38C and has a humidity of 40 percent.

The demanding nature of the poses and the heat are designed to raise your heart rate and exercise your muscles.

Who can take part in Hot Yoga classes?

Unlike many of our classes, Hot yoga is not for everyone. The intensity of the workout and the hot temperatures have the potential to cause heat-related illness. Be sure you check with your doctor before trying hot yoga class, especially if you have any health concerns. If you are pregnant, please seek advice from your Doctor before trying any Hot Studio class.

It's advised to skip hot yoga if you have:

Heart disease

High Blood Pressure

Problems with dehydration

Heat intolerance

A history of a heat-related illness (such as heatstroke)

Diabetes

What should I wear in the Hot Studio?

Clothing that is comfortable to move in and sweat in. Sweat wicking fabrics are ideal. We recommend modest shorts , non-sleeved T- shirts and bare feet.

Please leave your training shoes in the locker and wear flip flops to the studio. You can leave them outside in the storage rack during the class.

What else should I bring?

You will need a yoga mat (these are provided but you may prefer to bring your own), a yoga mat towel to avoid slipping (a beach towel or non-slip mat otherwise), a face towel, and a water bottle.

What should I do or prepare before a class?

It is  important to be well-hydrated before taking a hot yoga class, and we recommend drinking 3-4 litres and litres of water throughout the day in preparation of the high temperatures and humidity. Additionally, the 24 hours before the class we recommend you stay very well hydrated in preparation.

Before a class, try not to eat too much up to 2-3 hours before the class. Plus avoid snacking 1 hour before class.

After class, be sure to replenish lost minerals and electrolytes with a fortified drink afterwards, for example coconut water or similar.  Check out our juice bar on the way out for options.

What should I be aware of in a class?

Yoga isn’t competitive, everyone should take a class at their own pace. If you feel light headed or dizzy, inform the instructor and take a break. There’s no ego in yoga, so you just do what you’re capable of.

You will feel well-stretched and surprisingly relaxed. You will also feel more sweaty than a normal class, for obviously reasons. Embracing the sweat is the secret to hot yoga.  Typically people want to wipe their sweat away, when really, it’s better just to let the sweat flow. When you wipe it, you close your pores, and that means your body has to produce that sweat again. It’s best just to let it flow and realize that everyone around you is sweating just as much.

What are the benefits of Hot Yoga?

Detoxification: heavy sweating is said to help flush toxins from the skin. The heat also allows you to go a little more deeply and safely into the postures, so you know you’re really warming up the muscles and you can really approach the postures from a safe place.

Working in a heated room also elevates the heart rate, which makes the body work harder.

Working in heat helps the body relaximproves breathing (which helps conditions like asthma) and focuses the mind, which develops better mental concentration.

It’s really for people who want a more intense workout and for those who want to develop strength, flexibility and tone along with a cardiovascular workout.
